More about this list
Clubs are the frame of Madrid chess. Most of those listed here play in the team leagues of the Federación Madrileña de Ajedrez, and the federation's list of playing venues is where their addresses come from. In the capital they sit in neighbourhoods such as Chamberí, Hortaleza, Moratalaz, Carabanchel, Vallecas and Vicálvaro; outside it, towns from Alcalá de Henares, Torrejón and Coslada in the east to Móstoles, Leganés and Getafe in the south and Las Rozas, Torrelodones and Collado Villalba to the north-west each have at least one.
Many meet in a municipal building, be it a cultural centre, a civic centre or a sports hall, and a few are housed in a school. What the federation pages do not tell you is the day of the club evening or whether a newcomer may simply appear, so those lines often read as not stated. Where a club runs a site of its own, the card adds what it publishes: classes, a weekly evening, its tournaments.
